The final Antique & Collectors Auction Sale of 2011 was held at Gildings, Roman Way, Market Harborough, Leicestershire, when, as usual, a rich mix of items creating interest among collectors and dealers came under the gavel on the day following busy viewing sessions.

Keen demand was displayed again for gold and silver items ranging from jewellery to cutlery and for timepieces, including longcase clocks and pocket watches. Bidding this year has seen an increase on the internet as well as coming again in the busy room and on the telephone.

Auctioneer Mark Gilding said that the top price was £1,050 for Lot 382 – a twelve piece canteen of American sterling silver cutlery, 20th Century, comprising table knives and forks, the knives with stainless steel blades, soup spoons, dessert spoons, tea knives and teaspoons.

A pair of diamond and sapphire drop earrings (Lot 368) made £950 – diamond weight approx. 2ct; a four-piece silver tea set (Lot 307) £950 too – London 1916-18, of pedestal form, the teapot and hot water jug with ebonised handles; a George IV silver teapot (Lot 411) £400, London 1828, compressed and lobed form, chased and embossed foliate decoration, and a 9ct gold woven thread necklace (Lot 346) £380 under the hammer.

Lot 528 fetched £820 – a Globe Wernicke oak five-heights sectional bookcase, glazed flaps, and Lot 599 £400 – a figured walnut five-piece bedroom suite, comprising dressing table with triptych mirrors, five drawers surrounding the kneehole, a dressing table chair, upholstered in burnt orange dralon, a chest of drawers with three short drawers over four long drawers and triple wardrobe of inverted breakfront form.

An oak-cased grandmother clock (Lot 536) realised £380, arched brass dial, the movement striking on eight gongs; an oak and mahogany longcase clock (Lot 532) £340 – arched painted dial signed Jose Weston, Kirton, eight day two chain movement, striking on a bell; a George IV mahogany and marquetry longcase clock (Lot 529) £300, arched painted dial, signed J Joyce, Whitchurch, subsidiary second dial and date aperture, eight-day movement, striking on a bell, the case inlaid with Masonic motifs, and Lot 390 also £300 – a 9ct hallmarked gold pocket watch, white enamelled dial, signed ‘J W Benson, London,’ keyless movement.

Two lots of furniture both achieved £300 – Lot 596 – a matched reproduction joined oak three-piece bedroom suite, comprising a double wardrobe with panelled doors, chest of drawers, recessed geometric mouldings and a bedside cabinet, and Lot 551 – a contemporary traditional style three-piece lounge suite, comprising two scroll-end settees and a scroll-end stool, upholstered in patterned gold cotton.
