Television cameras were back in the saleroom when Gildings held their latest Antique & Collectors Auction Sale in their Roman Way headquarters, Market Harborough, Leicestershire. They were filming for a BBC programme to be screened at a later date.
There was plenty of drama to record too, not least when Lot 2 – a Wedgwood Fairyland "Torches" lustre vase, designed by Daisy Makeig-Jones, pattern number Z5360 (damaged) – sold for £2,100 – way in excess of its pre-sale estimate.
But top price on the day was £2,500 achieved by Lot 227 – a full set of Rupert Annuals to 2005.
Interest in this sale of more than 600 widely varying lots came again from bidders in the room, on the internet and on the telephone. Demand was enthusiastic from collectors and dealers local and further afield, many of whom had spent time at the viewings.

BBC television cameras were back at Gildings auctioneers, Roman Way, Market Harborough, Leicestershire, when the latest Antique & Collectors Auction Sale was held. Filming was done for a future edition of Bargain Hunt, hosted by Tim Wonnacott.
The rostrum for this well over 600 lot sale was shared by father-and-son John and Mark Gilding. Interest came from collectors and dealers locally and further afield, in the room, on the telephone and on the internet.
Mark Gilding said: "The viewing sessions for this sale were busier than ever which was excellent, as it always creates such a tremendous atmosphere and this carried over to sale day itself. Top quality items always sell well across all categories, but there is a continuing demand for the unusual and, indeed, the quirky."
Top price was achieved by a timepiece. A mahogany longcase clock (Lot 534) came under the gavel for £1,100 – with swan-neck pediment, the hood with Corinthian column supports, arched door with quarter column pilasters, reduced plinth base, arched brass dial with numbered moon phase, cast scrolled spandrels, engraved birds, silver chapter ring with Roman numerals, inscribed "He appointed the moon for seasons", signed – "Hampson, Warrington", eight-day movement, striking on a bell.
Two lots each fetched £700 – Lot 310 – Wilkinson’s Toby jug "Pro Patria", being a portrait of King George V, designed by Carruthers Gould for Soane & Smith Ltd., London, and Lot 356A – an 18k white gold diamond cluster bracelet.

"one of the most important art historical objects ever to be seen"
A brooch by the Victorian designer and architect William Burges which produced what BBC Antiques Roadshow jewellery expert Geoffrey Munn described as his "Tutankhamun moment" had been uncherished for many years and was close to being sold at a local market for just a few pounds.
Now it has been valued by Mr Munn at up to £10,000 and is to be sold at auction by Gildings of Market Harborough at a Fine Art and Antiques auction in early August. It has been described as "one of the most important art historical objects ever to be seen" on this long-running, popular BBC programme.
The jewel belongs to Jill Cousins of Market Harborough. It had been in her jewellery box for 20 years, before she decided to take it along to a market to see if she could sell it "perhaps for £10." Fortunately, although she had left it out to take, she forgot to put it into her handbag.
For just hours later, she saw Mr Munn on the Antiques Roadshow describing the brooch as his "most wanted" and something for which he had searched for over 20 years. The designs are in the Victoria and Albert Museum and had featured in a book of which Mr Munn was the co-author and he showed a set of 6 watercolour designs on the programme.
Mrs Cousins dashed to compare them with her brooch. There was a perfect match. A few days afterwards, she took the brooch into Gildings for their advice and help.
Mr Mark Gilding contacted the BBC programme to tell them about the find. He and Mrs Cousins were invited to a recording of the Antiques Roadshow a few weeks later in Birmingham, where a surprised and stunned Mr Munn was able to see her brooch and confirm its authenticity.
It had not been known whether any brooches had actually been made from the Burges designs. This brooch, made of silver, was probably for the wedding of his close friend John Pollard Seddon and his wife Margaret. The brooch is engraved with the initials "J.P.M.S." and has four turquoise forget-me-knots with a central red cabochon garnet heart.
Mr Gilding said: "It was all extremely exciting and Geoffrey Munn was overwhelmed to see something for which he had been looking for so long. The brooch had been inherited by Mrs Cousins’ mother from her old primary school teacher 20 years before she gave it to her daughter. Neither of them liked it very much at that time."
"William Burges is such a highly regarded designer and architect, anything by him creates tremendous interest and items of jewellery are extremely rare. Now we hope it will attract great attention when it is offered for sale."

The latest Antiques & Collectors Auction at Gildings, Market Harborough, drew a packed saleroom and keen interest among dealers and collectors there in person, or bidding on the internet or by telephone.
Auctioneer John Gilding said: "This was another well attended, excellent sale and many internet and telephone bidders were successful, showing yet again the popularity of this service for people unable to be there."
"James Lewis and a camera support team were at this sale filming for a new BBC television programme, so that also created interest. There are continuing indications that older furniture represents good value at the moment, so its availability through the saleroom is achieving an increasing response."
But top price on the day was achieved by a gent’s Ebel wristwatch (Lot 318) which came under the gavel for £2600 – the dial with Roman numerals and batons, the case marked 18k, with the original Ebel bracelet strap stamped 750 – in the original Ebel box. A glass table light (Lot 529) made £1300, with twin scrolled branches, other lights, prismatic drops, etc.

A large pair of Victorian cast spelter Marley horses (Lot 572) made £260, also converted to table lamps with shades, and a taxidermy item – tiger skin rug (Lot 491) sold for the same amount – £260 – with mounted head.
The latest Antique & Collectors Sale at Gildings Market Harborough saleroom attracted keen interest, including from BBC television Bargain Hunt cameras. But viewers will have to wait until later in the year before contestants’ profits or losses are revealed.
Auctioneer Mark Gilding said: "There was a great atmosphere with a packed saleroom, a lively amount of internet bidding, as well as people on the telephones. There is always something for everyone in these Antique and Collectors auctions, whether the buyers are private collectors, dealers, or for the interior design market. There was a tremendous variety of lots which helps to bring competitive prices as far as sellers are concerned too."
A 7¾ gauge steam locomotive and tender (Lot 632) in North British livery made the top price on the day, selling for £4800. But there was also brisk demand for The Beatles signed monochrome printed photographic publicity card (Lot 377) which fetched £1900 when it was sold on behalf of the British Red Cross.

This was signed by all 4 members of the group and was obtained by a friend of the vendor at Park Hall Country Club, near Sheffield, over 45 years ago.
A pair of chair frames (Lot 585) sold under the hammer for £1750, wing-back, with scrolled arms, on carved swept paw feet – in need of re-upholstery; a Victorian ebonised credenza (Lot 693) £1600, of traditional bow-front form, gilt metal caryatid supports and rosette borders, the door inlaid with a classical urn of flowers and various hard stones, on turned legs; a George III style walnut and burr walnut on oak linen press (Lot 677) £820 with moulded cornice, 2 fielded panelled doors to the upper section 2 short and a single long drawer below, with crossbanding, on bracket feet.

J Cavanagh, with certificate, photographs, two yellow metal desk seals, an 18ct signet ring with carved integral initials, a similar 9ct gold signet ring with a carved seal, and a yellow metal signet ring with engraved initials, marked 18c.
Earlier in the sale Lot 376 made £500, including a British War medal 1914-1920, Victory Medal 1914-15 Star. George V Army Long Service and Good Conduct Medal, all awarded to 11885 Spr. W Morton, Royal Engineers, with a Military Medal George V awarded to 8650 Pte. H Morton 2⁄KOSB, a Royal Engineers Rifle Association Medal and Hampshire Badge and other badges.
An Indian Mutiny Medal (Lot 451) made £420, with Lucknow Bar, awarded to Pte. M Connolly, First Madras Fusilier. The same amount was paid for a presentation commando dagger, Falklands (Lot 315) – Major General Jeremy Moore, June 1982, boxed, but "as found." A sabre (Lot 212) fetched £700, the blade engraved and dated 1812, with a basket hilt and metal scabbard.
