All our specialist auctions offer an incredible choice of pre-owned jewellery spanning every era, but no two sales are alike - each one takes on a character entirely its own.
This September, it's the turn of diamonds, with a brilliant array of showstopping pieces waiting to be discovered.
The enduring allure of diamonds
A 19th century royal passion sparked Britain's love affair with diamonds. After receiving a diamond-detailed engagement ring from Prince Albert, Queen Victoria wore the legendary Koh-i-Noor diamond as a brooch from 1852, before the stone was set into the crown jewels. Then, when vast diamond mines were discovered in South Africa in the 1860s, the royal fashion was suddenly within reach for many more people with money to spend.
By the 20th century, diamond engagement rings were firmly catching on. In 1938, the diamond company De Beers began a campaign to associate diamonds with eternal romance, an association sealed in 1947 with their iconic advertising slogan, ‘Diamonds are Forever’.
Ringing the changes
An old mine cut diamond ring featuring diamond shoulders is already attracting close attention from keen bidders eager to secure a truly special piece. Those who covet high-octane vintage glamour need look no further than an Art Deco diamond solitaire ring, again, with spectacular diamond shoulders.
Looking for something more contemporary? A large diamond half hoop ring set with baguette and brilliant diamonds is a wonderful example of modern design, while a 3-stone and 5-stone diamond ring are also expected to create considerable interest.
Whether you’re looking for a cluster ring, a solitaire or diamonds set with other precious stones, there are hundreds of diamond rings to explore with guide prices ranging from just £80-£120 for a pair of matching rings, to £4,000-£6,000 for a 1997 diamond solitaire ring with a Marquise cut stone.
Star of the show
Fashionable from Victorian times all the way through the 20th century, brooches are currently enjoying a high fashion-led revival. A striking Victorian diamond twelve-ray star brooch is expected to draw strong interest, not least because its detachable pin means it can also be worn as a pendant.
The auction also includes an eye-catching selection of diamond brooches in floral spray, bar and crescent designs, with two of the crescent brooches also featuring sapphires and rubies.
The ultimate accessory
As ever, the auction offers the opportunity to acquire beautiful diamond necklaces, including a showstopper attributed to the Nabucco collection by the acclaimed Italian jewellery designer Roberto Coin. Combining modern design with inspiration from the ancient world, this very special necklace features a whopping eighty diamonds set into its stunning white metal flexible construction.
Among the diamond earrings in the sale are a pair of modern diamond earrings, each with seventeen baguette cut stones graduating in size set in a vertical line, with thirty-three brilliant cut stones set to either side.
Best-dressed wrists
A diamond and pearl half hinged bangle feature two large pearls and an exquisite diamond chevron design is expected to set bidders’ hearts racing on the day. Two other diamond set half hinged bangles, one of which is also set with sapphires, will add drama and sparkle to any wrist.
Those in the market for a diamond watch are spoiled for choice. Modern designer tastes are catered for with two Versace ladies’ diamond set wristwatches, while vintage lovers are offered the unmissable opportunity to own one of two beautiful 1930s ladies’ diamond set bracelet wristwatches.
The Jewellery, Watches & Accessories auction takes place at 10:30am on Tuesday, 15th September, with in-person and online bidding available. For those wishing to see or try on pieces, viewing is available on Friday 11th September from 9:30am-4:30pm, Monday 14th September from 9:30am-4:30pm and on the morning of the auction from 9:00am-10:30am.
